As a Teacher:
|
I have worked in various settings at the high school level from suburban to rural. I taught students of differing demographics, including different cultures, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Whether it was as the sole Theatre teacher and director of my own program or as a member of a team of Theatre and Fine Arts teachers, I sought to embrace the specific responsibilities associated with each position. In addition to teaching all types of Theatre Arts classes, I have also taught Leadership and Communication Applications. In my time as a teacher, I directed numerous productions, including UIL One Act contest plays and sponsored a Drama Club. In the last teaching position I assumed, I also served in campus leadership as the Fine Arts Department chair and Lead Mentor for new teachers.

I decided to move towards campus leadership for two specific reasons:
1.) I was very fulfilled with my position as a teacher. I loved my students and the entire process-based practice that evolved as I grew as an instructor. However, I also discovered that I found immense gratification in helping new teachers and colleagues with struggles they encountered, whether it be classroom management or instructional strategies. I found that my own practice could transcend my classroom walls and knowing I could impact change at a greater level excited me. 2.) In a climate where budgetary cut backs are common, I felt the constraints as so often elective and Fine Arts funding is the first consideration for these reductions. I understand the vital role these types of programs play in the development of the "whole child" and want to serve in a capacity that advocates for and protects our programs. |
